Pre-Procedural Mouthwashes
Many dentists are currently giving patients a pre-procedural mouthwash. Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) provides the best solution as it presents no allergic issues. When used as part of standard protocols, followed by a Curasept chlorhexidine (CHX) ADS 220 Mouthwash, the CHX maximises the benefits of the H2O2.

CHX is a valuable addition to any dental treatment routine in its own right. Firstly, it has a high substantivity and efficacy as a chemical plaque control agent. It has also been shown to reduce the number of microorganisms in the aerosol generated from dental procedures.

The oxidation mechanism that occurs with H2O2 mothwashes is thought to help to inactivate Coronoviridae viruses on contaminated surfaces.

A commonly recommended pre-procedural routine is as follows:

Gargle with 1% H2O2 for at least 15 seconds, with the final rinse lasting 30 seconds.
Follow this with a 0.2% CHX mouth rinse for at least 60 seconds and then gargle for at least 15 seconds.
